It doesn’t always have to be complicated to look sleek and stylish as a man. For every tricky, hard to master quiff, there is a simple, straight out of bed look that can be just as effective. And while more complex trends in the men’s hair industry might come and go as they please, a cropped style will last forever.

If you’re looking for a low maintenance cut that bestows versatility, this classic cropped hairstyle is the one for you. It’s particularly suited to the older gent, but with modern accessories it can be worn confidently by all. The brilliance of a strong cropped cut is that it’s easily adapted to suit any hair type: it can take the weight away from thick hair, add volume and texture to fine hair, and even show off natural waves and curls.

Premium men’s grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge has teamed up with industry-leading barber, and founder of the Lions Barber Collective, Tom Chapman to give you a personal guide on how to style a timeless, tapered crop in front of your mirror at home.

A word of warning though; combining our ‘how to’ video with Tom’s expert tips will likely create some serious hair envy among your peers!

It all starts at the barbershop

A traditional crop is predominately scissor cut, but our collaboration with Tom features a clean taper, meaning a quick zip with the clippers will be required. Ask your barber for a tapered back and sides that blends neatly into a choppy, textured top. For a more thorough guide on what to ask your barber for, check out our barber to barber video.

At home

A tapered crop requires very little maintenance, but that doesn’t mean you can completely neglect the hair on top of your head.

Start by washing your hair in warm water with The Bluebeards Revenge Shampoo and Conditioner to make sure any previous hair products are removed. Then, rough dry your hair with a towel and apply a quality sea salt spray as a pre-styling agent. This will give the hair some early structure for you to work with, as well as creating a natural look with added texture.

Using a hairdryer and The Bluebeards Revenge Quiff Roller, work the sea salt spray through the hair to create added volume and a choppy finish. Finally, complete the look by evenly distributing The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Clay through the hair. For a more textured appearance, rub the clay between your fingertips and massage in from the roots to the tips.
