Straight shaving guru praises Bluebeards Revenge

YouTube shaving celebrity Jockeys41 has given a glowing review of The Bluebeards Revenge shaving cream and post shave balm.

The shaving guru, who specialises in straight shaving videos, will be video reviewing both products in the next couple of weeks.

Here are his written reviews:

Cream:
Scent – subtle, but very nice. Distinguished, like what a gentleman should smell like. Didn’t have the staying power that some soaps and creams do, but in my book that’s a good thing. Some folks like a very strong smelling lather, so for them I’d give it 3/5 but for myself I’d say 4/5.

Latherability – outstanding. Easily 5/5. I don’t know if it’s the best, but I’ve never used better and I’ve used dozens. Actually overflowed out of the scuttle when I hit it with my 28mm silvertip badger brush. Lather is a little coarse at first but with work becomes very thick and creamy. Quicker to lather than most soaps, takes a bit more time than some of the German and Italian creams, but is much thicker when done.

Lubricity – not as slick as soaps with bentonite, so it’s not slippy on the skin. for folks that like a very slippy lather, I’d give it 2/5, for myself I’d give it 4/5 as I don’t prefer bentonite in my lather (being a fan of spike-point straight razors I like a bit more traction.)

Staying power – very dense on the skin, doesn’t dry out like the triple-milled soaps, stays on the skin better than the runnier Italian creams. 4/5

Value – if my pounds to dollars conversion rate is accurate, this would run about 25USD per tub. This puts it a bit more expensive than many non-custom hard soaps, but well below the German and Italian creams and WAY cheaper than bespoke soaps and creams. I might further add that a little bit of this stuff goes a VERY long way, so I’m giving it a 5/5 for value. I’d consider this a premium cream at a mid-range price, so it’s a bargain.

Other notes — the cream claims to contain some follicle-growth inhibiting substance. I’m an engineer and not a chemist, so I can’t evaluate the clinical validity of this claim, but subjectively I’d say that 24 hours after shaving my stubble feels more like 5 o’clock shadow than a full day of growth. At the 12-hour mark, where 5 o’clock shadow typically begins to abrade my wife’s face, she remarked on how smooth my face had remained. I will be evaluating this further before I make the video to see if continued application makes any difference.

Overall cream – 22/25 by my standards (little bit less for folks that like bentonite or a strong scent)

Aftershave balm:
Scent – I really like this scent. It smells like I remember my great-grandfather’s shaving kit smelling. Very old-fashioned. I’d give it 4/5 but I suspect that some folks who prefer an aftershave that’s more floral wouldn’t care for it. Love it or hate it, I guess.

Soothing – easily a 5/5. This stuff is exceptional. I just ran a few miles in the cold and wind before I shaved and showered, and this soothed the windburn so well I wound up putting it on my nose and forehead as well! Better than any lotion or cream I have used. Will be a little heavy for use during the hot Texas summer when we typically use only bayrum or menthol splashes, but fantastic for cold or dry weather.

Skin finishing – some balms have a nice skin-tightening effect, leaving smoothly shaved skin even more touchable. This is among the best of those, making my skin feel as good as Trumper’s Skin Food. 5/5

Value – again, assuming my conversion is right, this is somewhere in the neighbourhood of 18USD a tub, which makes it in the middle of the pack as far as cost. Little bit more than some of the domestic stuff, but loads cheaper than the imported stuff, while being as good as any I’ve tried. 4/5

Overall aftershave balm – 18/20. Absolutely brilliant.

Summary: the cream is really quite good and the aftershave balm is even better. Growth inhibiting properties of cream remain not fully tested, but even apart from that it’s a very good cream. I’d recommend either to any shaver without hesitation. Especially the balm, as nice as the cream is the balm is damn near perfect… outshines all others I’ve tried.
