Scottish shaver trounces seven other barbers from across UK to be named king of the wet shaves, and will now keep stubble in check for division two first team
After months of hard work and eager anticipation, the winner of Britain’s Best Shave 2015 has finally been crowned. And to top off a triumphant week for the winner, he has also been named official barber for Rangers Football Club.
In the culmination of a gruelling competition spanning five long months, Luigi Caterino, of The Italian Job barbershop in Galashiels, beat off razor-sharp competition from his opponents on Sunday to take the coveted title of Britain’s Best Wet Shaving Barber.
Luigi, who originally comes from Italy, beat seven other regional winners from across the UK in order to claim his place in the grand final, impressing industry renowned judges Gary Machin, Patrick Brien and Garath Clark with his impeccable skills to prove that he really is a cut above the rest.
The drama unfolded inside a boxing ring at the first ever Barber UK, which saw swarms of people turning out to watch the event at the Birmingham NEC on May 10. The competition, run by the British Barbers’ Association and premium men’s grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge, involved the UK’s finest barbering talents battling it out in a round of quarter finals, with Luigi progressing on to the semis along with South East champion Elvis Gjokaj, Midlands winner Shakar Bakani, and defending champion, Parsa Rad.
The nail-biting final itself saw 2014 finalist Shakar make an admirable attempt for the title, but he was unable to hold his own against Scotland’s Luigi, who eventually reigned triumphant.
The winning barber, who moved to the UK fourteen years ago, celebrated his win by visiting Rangers home ground Murray Park yesterday, where he whipped members of the first team – including Haris Vuckic – into shape by giving them the benefit of his wet shaving skills. He will now continue to work with the side as their official barber, providing them with impeccable shaves on tap.
Rangers striker Haris Vuckic commented: “Congratulations to Rangers fan Luigi on winning this title. He is obviously very talented and after watching him today I can see why he has picked up this top award.”
Luigi said that he was over the moon with his double victory, and couldn’t wait to get stuck into his work with Rangers.
“I can’t believe it, I’m absolutely blown away by all that has happened this week. I made it as far as the Best Shave semis last year, and I’ve been putting in the hours over the past twelve months to try and improve my skills in any way that I could. It seems that it did the job – I keep having to pinch myself to remind myself that it’s not a dream! This has been a life-changing experience for me.
“Being invited down to Murray Park to shave the Rangers first team was a huge and unexpected bonus. I’ve been a fan of the team for fourteen years, so it’s been amazing to have the chance to meet the players and show them what I can do.
“I can’t wait to get stuck into my work with the team, and am also going to be an ambassador for The Bluebeards Revenge, which is fantastic. I couldn’t be happier with the way things have gone for me over the past week, and I’d like to thank all of my friends and family for their much-appreciated support.”
Nick Gibbens, marketing manager for The Bluebeards Revenge, added: “Luigi has put absolutely everything he’s got into the competition, and he makes a truly deserving winner. It’s great to see how far he has come since competing in the semis last year, and we can’t wait to have him as an ambassador.
“The event has not only been a celebration of the most creative and innovative of British wet shave barbering, but also a showcase of the growing global reach and talent of the UK cut-throat shaving industry.”
