What's the difference between Deodorant and antiperspirant

What’s the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?

What’s the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant? It’s a simple question that we’ve been asked a thousand times at Bluebeards HQ. Below, we clear things up once and for all, leaving you more informed and better suited to care for your underarms in style!

Deodorant vs antiperspirant

Let’s cut to the chase. Deodorant is designed to protect against body odour, while antiperspirant provides added protection from sweat. The difference might seem subtle, but failing to understand it could leave you in a sticky situation when you next raise your arms!

Basically, a deodorant’s job is to neutralise any bad smells from your body odour, while providing long-lasting freshness and a unique scent. In comparison, an antiperspirant takes things one step further by helping to control the amount you sweat, reducing the chance of underarm wetness.

The key ingredients that allow an antiperspirant to control sweat are aluminium salts. These salts help to block sweat ducts, thereby reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface.

Which one should you choose?

When it comes to choosing between a deodorant and an antiperspirant, it’s important to consider a few key factors: are you (by nature) a sweaty person, do you lead a particularly active lifestyle, and how sensitive is your skin?

If you’re always in and out of the gym, or just generally looking to get your sweat patches under control, then an antiperspirant should be at the top of your list. Meanwhile, if you’re a little more laid back and sweat patches aren’t an issue, opt for a deodorant.

Those that struggle with particularly sensitive skin could also find that the aluminium salts in antiperspirants cause irritation, meaning a more natural deodorant might be more suitable. If this is you, it might also be worth avoiding underarm products with high concentrations of alcohol.

Ultimately, we’d recommend having both options at your disposal, and then tailoring your protection to your needs. Having a chill day at home? What’s better: roll-ons or aerosols?

This one’s down to personal preference, with the main differences being: the speed of application, how compact the product is and how sustainable/recyclable the packaging is.

At The Bluebeards Revenge, we’re all about roll-ons! Why? Because these compact bottles can be easily slipped inside gym bags, ruck sacks or even an office drawer for a quick freshen up when you need it most. They also work well in confined spaces such as changing rooms and bathrooms, when inhaling great clouds of sweat-busting scent should definitely be avoided. Better yet, our roll-ons are much easier to recycle and can even be refilled thanks to their fully-detachable lids. This means they’re helping to reduce the 600-million aerosol cans the UK throws away each year!
